Suspect Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Shooting At Arriving Deputies In Riverview

RIVERVIEW, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday night in the 3300 block of Manor Cove Circle. Just before 8:15 p.m. on March 24, 2026, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic incident in Riverview.

Detectives learned during the investigation that 41-year-old Antonio Jelks had been involved in a verbal altercation. Investigators say Jelks fired a gun inside his residence and then fled. As deputies arrived on the scene, Jelks began firing several rounds, striking deputies’ vehicles multiple times.

Deputy Cole Eskine returned fire and struck the suspect. Despite his injuries, Jelks fled into the neighborhood. K9 units eventually tracked him to a nearby home, and he was transported to Tampa General Hospital for medical treatment.

“Our deputies approach every situation with the goal of a peaceful resolution. In this case, the suspect’s actions made that outcome impossible,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I’m proud of our deputies for relying on their training, staying focused under pressure, and demonstrating the courage it takes to protect this community.”

On March 25, 2026, officials announced that Jelks is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Armed Trespass of a Structure or Conveyance, and Shooting At, Within, or Into a Vehicle.

“These charges reflect the seriousness and heinous nature of this suspect’s actions,” Sheriff Chronister stated in an update. “We appreciate the thorough work of the State Attorney’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, whose efforts help ensure the safety of our entire community.”

Jelks remains in stable condition while receiving treatment at the hospital. In accordance with standard protocol, Deputy Eskine has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. The FDLE remains the lead agency in the ongoing inquiry.
