A 24-year-old Taiwanese national is behind bars in St. Johns County after allegedly swindling an elderly resident out of more than $320,000 in cash and gold.
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, property crimes detectives arrested Youwei Hsu and charged him with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and elderly exploitation following a swift fraud investigation that began on May 20, 2026.
The case began when an elderly St. Johns County resident started interacting with individuals on a communication app. The victim was drawn into what they believed was a legitimate investment opportunity, handing over an initial $20,000 to enter the scheme. Between February and May 2026, the victim contributed an additional $75,000-plus in cash to cover a larger outstanding payment, delivering the money to an individual who traveled in person to collect it. Throughout those months, the victim believed their investment was growing, unaware that they were being scammed.
The situation escalated in May when a suspect, later identified as Hsu, traveled directly to the victim’s home. There, he accepted $226,000 worth of gold bars and coins as payment for money the victim allegedly owed.
Detectives tracked Hsu’s movements to Miami-Dade County, where local law enforcement located and detained him. Hsu was transported back to Northeast Florida and is currently held at the St. Johns County Jail on a $750,000 bond. Sheriff’s office officials stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
