TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Carolina Hurricanes are set to settle their season series tonight at Benchmark International Arena, with both teams looking to break a 1-1-0 stalemate. This Saturday matchup marks the final regular-season meeting between the two Eastern Conference heavyweights, following a 6-4 Tampa Bay victory in December and a 5-4 Carolina win in February.
Tampa Bay enters the contest with a 40-20-4 record, sitting second in the Atlantic Division. They are coming off a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, a game that saw goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy secure his 30th win of the season.
This milestone ties Vasilevskiy with Ed Belfour and Marc-Andre Fleury for the fourth-most 30-win seasons in NHL history. The Lightning have historically performed well against the Hurricanes at home, carrying a 45-22-6 all-time record in Tampa.
The Hurricanes currently lead the Metropolitan Division with an 41-18-6 record and 88 points. Despite a recent 3-1 loss to St. Louis, Carolina remains one of the league’s most consistent road teams, posting a 17-9-4 record away from home. Sebastian Aho leads the Hurricanes’ offense with 66 points in 65 games, while Andrei Svechnikov and Seth Jarvis follow closely behind.
Special teams could play a deciding factor, as both squads possess identical 22.2% power-play conversion rates. Tampa Bay holds a slight statistical advantage on the penalty kill at 81.5% compared to Carolina’s 79.6%.
For the Lightning, Nikita Kucherov continues to pace the offense with 106 points. Kucherov recently surpassed the 1,100 career-point mark during Thursday’s win and has tallied 10 points over his last four outings.
Teammate Jake Guentzel has been particularly effective against Carolina this season, recording five points in the two previous meetings. Recent trade acquisition Corey Perry has also contributed quickly, posting three points and a plus-3 rating in his first four games back with the franchise.
Vasilevskiy is expected to start for the Bolts, bringing a career .925 save percentage against the Hurricanes into the tonight’s game. Carolina will look to counter a Lightning offense that has averaged 3.51 goals per game this season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
