TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Police Department is investigating an officer-involved incident at the Roadway Inn, located at 2207 E Busch Boulevard.

At 11:20 p.m. on April 12, 2023, officers responded to the Roadway Inn in reference to a subject with a firearm who had been following the complainant, who is known to him, over an ongoing dispute. Officers arrived on the scene and began conducting surveillance in the area. Shortly after their arrival, they located a male who matched the description of the subject.

Officers gave verbal commands to the man, who then attempted to conceal himself behind a tree and quickly made a motion to his waistband.

“In fear for his life, one of the officers fired one shot toward the suspect. The suspect, nor the officers involved, were injured over the course of the incident,” said Tampa PD.

After a brief foot chase, and with assistance from both K-9 and Aviation, officers took the suspect into custody in a nearby neighborhood. The suspect was identified as DeAngelo Deshawn Marino, 26.

He faces charges of Carrying a Concealed Firearm and Resisting Arrest without Violence following last night’s incident. He was booked into the Orient Road Jail. He previously faced charges of Battery and Grand Theft, amongst others. Marino also had a warrant for his arrest (Failure to Appear  Resisting Arrest).

The suspect’s firearm was located near the shooting scene outside of the Roadway Inn.

The officer who shot toward the suspect has no previous incidents of use of force and has been employed by TPD since 2016. His name is being withheld due to the active investigation at this time.

“At the end of the day, I am grateful that nobody was injured as a result of this incident,” said Interim Chief Lee Bercaw. “This is just another example of the dangers officers face every day on the job in their mission to protect our community. Per standard protocol, the involved officer is placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.”
