TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa drivers who rely on South MacDill Avenue will need to budget some extra travel time or find an alternate route over the next few days.
Starting at 9 a.m. today, June 1, the Tampa Water Department is shutting down the southbound lane of South MacDill Avenue between Interbay Boulevard and West Wyoming Avenue. The daily closures are required so utility crews can perform scheduled maintenance work on the local water distribution system.
Rather than a total 24-hour blockade, the department is keeping the lane closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day to avoid conflicting with the heaviest early morning and evening rush hours. The city has deployed barricades and traffic flaggers to the neighborhood to guide vehicles safely past the work zone. Drivers are being asked to exercise extra caution while passing through the area, and officials noted that traffic plans might change on the fly as the project progresses.
If everything goes according to plan, the maintenance should wrap up and normal traffic flow will resume by 4 p.m. this Thursday, June 4. However, city officials cautioned that the timeline relies heavily on favorable weather.
There is also a chance this won’t be the final visit to the site, as the department indicated they may need to schedule a follow-up date to complete the remaining tasks. If a return trip is necessary, the city will issue a new traffic alert.
