TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers in South Tampa should prepare for delays and detours starting next week as city crews begin road surface repairs on a busy stretch of South Himes Avenue.

According to a city announcement, lane closures are scheduled for South Himes Avenue between West Horatio Street and West Dale Mabry Avenue. The project is set to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, and is expected to wrap up by the end of the day on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.

Work crews will be active during the day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., impacting typical commuting hours. Officials noted that the Bon Air community will likely see the most significant impact from the construction activity.

To manage traffic flow, signed detours will be in place for both northbound and southbound motorists:

  • Southbound Traffic: Drivers traveling south on South Himes Avenue will be redirected west onto West Azeele Street, then south onto South Dale Mabry Highway, and finally onto West Swann Avenue.
  • Northbound Traffic: Drivers traveling north on South Himes Avenue will be detoured west onto West Swann Avenue, north onto South Dale Mabry Highway, and then to West Azeele Street.

Barricades and signage will be stationed throughout the area to guide drivers through the new routes. The City of Tampa is advising motorists to plan ahead and use alternative routes when possible to avoid congestion near the work zone.
