TAMPA, Fla. – Commuters heading through the heart of Ybor City should prepare for delays starting today, as the Tampa Water Department begins emergency maintenance on East 7th Avenue.
Officials confirmed that the eastbound lane between Nuccio Parkway and North Avenida Republica De Cuba will be cordoned off starting at 9 a.m. today, May 5. The closure is necessary to allow crews to perform essential repairs on the local water distribution system.
To manage the fallout from the lane closure, the city has deployed a team of flaggers and set up a series of barricades to guide drivers through the detour. City officials are urging motorists to seek out alternate routes to avoid the bottleneck, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Drivers who must travel through the work zone are asked to exercise extra caution for the safety of the roadside crews.

While the city aims to stick to the current plan, the Water Department noted that “modifications to lane closures may be necessary during the course of the work,” depending on what crews find beneath the pavement.
If the project stays on track and the Florida weather holds steady, the lane is expected to reopen, and traffic patterns should return to normal by 4 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6.
However, this may not be the end of the orange cones; the department indicated they might need to return at a later date to finish up additional work, promising a fresh update if that happens.
