TAMPA, Fla. – Downtown Tampa is preparing for a significant surge in visitors this weekend, as a dense schedule of festivals, professional sports, and conventions is expected to push the city’s infrastructure to its limits. Starting Friday, February 27, and running through Sunday, March 1, city officials are warning of heavy traffic congestion and a severe shortage of available street parking.

The influx begins Friday evening with back-to-back performances at the Straz Center, but the real test for commuters arrives Saturday.

The city will be managing several high-capacity events simultaneously, including the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts at Julian B. Lane Park and the Tampa Taco Fest at Al Lopez Park.

Sports fans will also be flooding the area for the Yankees spring training opener at Steinbrenner Field, a Lightning game at the Benchmark International Arena, and the high-octane Monster Jam at Raymond James Stadium.

With tens of thousands of people expected to move through the downtown core and surrounding stadium districts, local authorities are urging residents and visitors to ditch their personal vehicles when possible.

Transportation officials recommend utilizing the free TECO Line Streetcar, the Dash shuttle service, or HART buses to navigate the busiest zones. For those traveling shorter distances, rentable scooters and bicycles are being highlighted as the fastest way to bypass idling cars.

The activity continues into Sunday with the Hyde Park Fresh Market and the conclusion of the Student Television Network convention at the Tampa Convention Center.
