Tampa Traffic Alert: Full Closure Of South MacDill Avenue Starts Today

TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers in South Tampa should prepare for a significant detour starting this morning. Beginning at 9:00 AM today, April 2, a stretch of South MacDill Avenue will be completely closed to all through traffic.

The closure spans the blocks between West Varn Avenue and West Nepoleon Avenue. According to city officials, the shutdown is required to allow Tampa Water Department crews to perform maintenance on the local water distribution system.

The city has already begun placing barricades and directional signage throughout the neighborhood to help guide drivers around the work zone.

While the department aims to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible, they noted that “modifications to lane closures may be necessary during the course of the work.”

Commuters are being urged to scout out alternate routes before heading out and to exercise extra caution if they must drive near the construction site. If everything stays on schedule and the weather remains clear, the road is expected to fully reopen by 5:00 PM this evening.

“The staff and crews of the Tampa Water Department appreciate everyone’s patience during this time,” the department shared in a statement regarding the short-term disruption.
