TAMPA, Fla. – Late-night drivers in Tampa should prepare for a detour tonight as crews temporarily shut down a major artery of the city’s highway system. Starting at 10 p.m. on Monday, May 4, the southbound I-275 ramp leading to eastbound I-4 (Exit 45B) will close to all traffic.
The ramp is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5, provided that weather conditions remain clear for construction teams.
The closure is a required step for the Downtown Tampa Interchange Safety and Operational Improvements project. During the seven-hour window, work crews will be positioned on the roadway to perform essential overhead bridge work.
Because the work happens directly above the travel lanes, the ramp must be completely cleared of vehicles to ensure the safety of both the construction workers and the public.

To navigate the closure, motorists traveling south on I-275 will need to continue past the usual I-4 exit.
Drivers are instructed to use Exit 45A at Jefferson Street, staying to the left at the fork toward Downtown East. From there, the detour directs traffic to turn left onto Scott Street, which provides a path to re-enter the interstate via the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp.
Electronic message boards and temporary road signs have been stationed along the interstate to guide drivers through the detour route. While the work is scheduled for the overnight hours to minimize the impact on heavy commuter traffic, officials are still urging caution.
