TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers moving through Hillsborough County this week should prepare for a significant detour. Starting Wednesday, April 29, at 11 p.m., the eastbound I-4 ramps to both northbound and southbound I-75 at Exit 9 will be completely closed to traffic.
The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. Thursday, April 30, though officials noted the schedule is weather permitting.
The shutdown is a necessary step in a broader project aimed at safety and operational improvements along I-4, stretching from the Tampa Bypass Canal to the I-75 interchange.
While the work is being done overnight to minimize the headache for commuters, anyone on the road during those six hours will need to follow a specific detour.

To get around the closure, motorists will be directed to bypass Exit 9 and continue east to Exit 10. From there, drivers must turn left onto Mango Road and get back onto the interstate using the westbound I-4 entrance ramp.
Once heading west, drivers can then link up with the I-75 ramps at Exit 9 as they normally would.
Electronic message boards and temporary signs are being staged now to help navigate the shift in traffic flow.
Safety officials are urging everyone behind the wheel to stay focused, slow down, and keep a sharp eye out for construction crews working near the lanes. If the weather turns sour, the work may be rescheduled, so keeping an eye on local traffic updates before heading out is a smart move for late-night travelers.
