Tampa Traffic Alert: Major Stretch Of North Florida Ave Shut Down For Water Main Repairs

TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers in downtown Tampa are facing a significant detour this week. Starting Wednesday, March 18, the Tampa Water Department has implemented a full road closure on North Florida Avenue, stretching from Scott Street to East Estelle Street.

The closure is required so city crews can address a water main break in the area. Local officials have already placed barricades and directional signage to help navigate motorists around the site, though delays are expected. While the department aims to restore the road quickly, they cautioned that “modifications may be necessary during the course of the work.”

According to the current project timeline, North Florida Avenue is not expected to reopen to normal traffic patterns until 4:00 PM on Monday, March 26. This schedule is not set in stone, however, as work progress remains heavily “contingent upon weather conditions.”

Residents should also be aware that this might not be the final visit from repair teams. The city stated that the Tampa Water Department “may need to return at a later date to complete additional work,” and a follow-up notice will be issued if that happens.

For now, the city is asking for cooperation from the public, noting that “the staff and crews of the Tampa Water Department appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.” Drivers are urged to use extra caution and allow for additional travel time when passing through the surrounding blocks.
