Tampa Traffic Alert: MLK Boulevard Lane Squeeze Could Slow Your Morning Drive

TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers heading through East Tampa today should keep a close eye on the road as the Tampa Water Department kicks off emergency maintenance on East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Starting at 8 a.m. this morning, May 6, crews officially closed the outer eastbound lane between North 12th Street and North 15th Street to begin repairs on the city’s water distribution system.

City officials have already placed barricades and directional signs along the route to help navigate the shift in traffic flow. While the work is localized to a three-block stretch, the department is urging motorists to seek out alternate routes if possible to avoid potential bottlenecks.

For those who must travel through the area, the city emphasizes the importance of staying alert and using extra caution near the work zone.

The closure isn’t expected to last long. If everything goes according to plan, the Tampa Water Department aims to have the lane reopened and traffic patterns back to normal by 5 p.m. this evening.

However, officials did note that the timeline is contingent on the weather and that the specific layout of the lane closures might change as the repairs progress.
