TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa drivers and pedestrians navigating West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard have a new structural change to watch out for this week. The Florida Department of Transportation has officially activated a brand-new traffic signal and pedestrian crossing system at the intersection of SR 574 and N. 12th Street.
The lights are now fully energized and handling daily traffic flow. Because the intersection previously operated without a signal, local officials are urging everyone on the road to stay sharp and adapt quickly. Drivers should remain alert to the changed traffic conditions as motorists and pedestrians get used to the new signalized intersection.
This intersection overhaul didn’t happen overnight.
The state’s contractor, Cone & Graham, Inc., started working on these specific safety upgrades last year. The crews have spent the last several months installing the physical traffic poles, wiring the pedestrian signals, and painting the new crosswalks to make the area highly visible.
While the lights are now up and running, the entire intersection project isn’t completely wrapped up just yet. Final details and punch-list items are still being handled, and the state expects the project to finish next month.
