TAMPA, Fla. – If you usually take West Cypress Street to get around, you’ll want to give yourself some extra time or find a new shortcut starting this morning. The Tampa Water Department is heading out to West Cypress between North Habana and North Tampania Avenues to do some maintenance on the water lines, and they’re taking over the eastbound lane to get it done.

The work kicks off today, Monday, March 16, at 9 a.m. The good news is that they aren’t shutting things down 24/7; the crews plan to pack up and reopen all lanes by 4 p.m. every afternoon so the evening commute isn’t a total disaster. Just keep in mind that the barricades will go right back up at 9 a.m. the following morning.

You’ll see flaggers out there directing traffic and plenty of signs to help you navigate the detour. The city is asking everyone to keep their eyes on the road and slow down while passing the workers.

As of right now, the goal is to have everything back to normal by 4 p.m. this Thursday, March 19. Of course, that depends entirely on the Florida weather cooperating. In a statement regarding the project, the city noted that “the staff and crews of the Tampa Water Department appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”

Until then, expect a bit of a bottleneck in West Tampa and maybe consider North Cass Street if you’re in a hurry.
