TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers navigating South Tampa in the evenings should plan for detours starting tonight, as crews shut down a busy intersection to wrap up repairs on a water main.

According to the Tampa Water Department, the intersection of South MacDill Avenue and West Azeele Street will see a full road closure beginning today, January 13, at 5:30 p.m.

The closure isn’t a one-time event; the intersection is scheduled to close daily from 5:30 p.m. to midnight. Crews are returning to the site to complete permanent road restoration following emergency work on a water main break that occurred earlier.

City officials say the project should be quick, with traffic patterns expected to return to normal by midnight on Friday, January 16. However, the schedule relies heavily on weather conditions, and lane closures could shift as work progresses.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area during evening hours if possible. Barricades and detour signs are already in place to help route traffic around the work zone.

While officials hope to knock out the restoration this week, the Water Department noted that crews might need to return at a later date for additional finishing work.
