TAMPA, Fla. — Drivers navigating the area will need to alter their routes for the next day and a half. The Tampa Water Department has closed all lanes of North 15th Street at the intersection with East 5th Avenue to allow crews to perform maintenance on the local water distribution system.
The full road closure went into effect at 9 a.m. today, June 22, 2026. City officials expect the work to wrap up and traffic to return to its normal patterns by 4 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, June 23. However, this recovery timeline depends entirely on the weather, and the department noted that schedule modifications may be necessary as the project moves forward.
Barricades and directional signage have been set up around the perimeter of the intersection to help guide drivers through the area. Local authorities are urging motorists to exercise extra caution when driving near the work zone and to plan alternative routes to avoid unnecessary delays.
This may not be the only time crews are out at this location. The Tampa Water Department indicated that workers might need to return at a later date to finish additional maintenance. If a follow-up closure is required, the city will provide a new traffic update at that time.
In the release, city representatives emphasized that the utility workers recognize the inconvenience of the sudden detour, noting that “the staff and crews of the Tampa Water Department appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”
