TAMPA, Fla. — If you plan on driving through the east side of Tampa late Tuesday or Wednesday night, you are going to want to give yourself some extra time.
The westbound Interstate 4 entrance ramp from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (State Road 574) is scheduled to shut down completely during the overnight hours on May 26 and May 27. Crews will close the ramp starting at 11 p.m. each evening and plan to reopen it by 6 a.m. the following morning, provided the weather cooperates.
Transportation officials have mapped out a detour to help drivers navigate around the closure. Motorists traveling west on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will need to keep driving past the usual ramp, take a left turn onto 50th Street (State Road 583), and then make a right onto Columbus Drive to get onto the I-4 westbound ramp there.

Electronic message boards and roadside detour signs will be posted throughout the area to guide drivers along the alternate route. Authorities urge everyone to slow down, exercise caution while navigating the work zone, and keep a sharp eye out for construction workers on the road.
The overnight closures are necessary for construction crews working on the ongoing I-4 westbound auxiliary lane project. Once finished, the project will add a brand-new travel lane to the interstate between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Exit 5 and 50th Street at Exit 3.
