TAMPA, Fla. — Drivers who normally use the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard entrance to westbound I-4 will need to find another way around this coming weekend.

The Florida Department of Transportation has announced that its contractor, C.W. Roberts Contracting, Inc., is scheduled to shut down the westbound I-4 entrance ramp starting at 11 p.m. this Friday, February 27. If the weather stays clear, the ramp should be back open to traffic by 6 a.m. on Monday, March 2.

The closure is part of a larger project to add an auxiliary travel lane on westbound I-4 between MLK Jr. Boulevard (Exit 5) and 50th Street (Exit 3). This extra lane is intended to help ease the merging process and improve the flow of traffic through one of Tampa’s busier interstate stretches.

For those caught in the closure, a detour will be in place. Motorists will be directed to travel east on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (SR 574), take a left onto 50th Street (SR 583), and then a right onto Columbus Drive to reach the westbound I-4 entrance.

Construction officials will have message boards and signs posted throughout the area to help guide people through the detour. While the work is underway, the department is asking drivers to stay alert, slow down in the work zone, and keep a close eye out for crews on the road.
