Major Downtown Tampa Artery Detours Drivers for Crucial Bridge Work
TAMPA, Fla. – A section of 7th Avenue in downtown Tampa remains closed to traffic as crews continue critical overhead bridge work for the I-275/I-4 Downtown Tampa Interchange project. The closure, affecting the stretch of 7th Avenue between Central Avenue and Nebraska Avenue, is now expected to last through September 2025, pending favorable weather conditions.
The extended closure is necessary for the ongoing Safety and Operational Improvements project, a major undertaking scheduled for completion in 2027. This phase of the project focuses on overhead bridge work that requires the full closure of the roadway to ensure the safety of both construction workers and the public.

To help with the traffic disruption, officials have established a detour route for drivers traveling in both directions.
Westbound drivers on 7th Avenue are being directed to turn right onto Nebraska Avenue, left onto Palm Avenue, and then left again onto Central Avenue to reconnect with 7th Avenue. Conversely, eastbound traffic is being rerouted by turning left onto Central Avenue, right onto Palm Avenue, and finally right onto Nebraska Avenue before continuing toward 7th Avenue.
Electronic message boards and other signage have been placed throughout the area to guide drivers through the detours. Authorities are urging all motorists to exercise extreme caution when navigating the work zone, to be mindful of construction workers and pedestrians, and to remain alert for changing traffic patterns.
