TAMPA, Fla. — Commuting through North Tampa is about to get a lot more frustrating for the next few days.
Starting at 9 a.m. today, May 26, city crews are shutting down both the outside and center southbound lanes on a busy stretch of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. The closures stretch from East Fowler Avenue down to University Square Drive, right in the heart of a major commercial and commuter hub.
The disruption comes as the Tampa Water Department steps in to run scheduled maintenance on the local water distribution system.

Local drivers should brace for delays. While the city has already put up barricades and detour signs to help guide traffic around the work zone, officials are actively urging commuters to find alternative routes entirely. They also warned that the exact lane setups might shift over the next few days as the project progresses.
If everything goes according to plan, the lanes will reopen and normal traffic patterns will return by 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 28. However, that timeline depends entirely on the weather, and city officials noted that crews might have to return at a later date to finish up any leftover work.
