TAMPA, Fla. — Drivers who normally rely on North Habana Avenue for their daily commute will need to find a new route this week. Both the northbound and southbound lanes between West Saint Louis Street and West Saint John Street are currently locked down as city crews scramble to fix a major water main break.
The Tampa Water Department officially closed the thoroughfare on Tuesday morning to begin emergency repairs.
While the city has placed barricades and detour signs throughout the neighborhood to help drivers navigate the mess, officials are urging motorists to avoid the area entirely if possible and exercise extra caution if they must drive nearby.

City officials noted that the scope of the project isn’t set in stone, stating that “modifications may be necessary during the course of the work.”
If everything goes according to plan, the road is expected to reopen and return to normal traffic patterns by 4:30 p.m. this Friday, April 3. However, that timeline isn’t a guarantee. The department cautioned that work schedules are heavily dependent on the weather, and crews might have to return at a later date to complete the finishing touches.
Residents should keep an eye out for further updates if the repair window needs to be extended.
