TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers in the Tampa area should prepare for a slow crawl this morning as city crews scramble to fix a broken water main. Starting at 8:30 a.m. today, May 15, the City of Tampa shuttered the westbound lane and the adjacent sidewalk on West Linebaugh Avenue, specifically the block between North Tampa Street and North Ashley Street.
The Tampa Water Department has deployed barricades and flaggers to the scene to help route cars around the repair site. City officials are urging motorists to stay sharp and use extra caution while navigating the area, as the footprint of the construction zone might shift as the repairs progress.
If everything goes according to plan and the Florida weather cooperates, the city expects to have the lane reopened and traffic flowing normally by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 18.

However, this timeline isn’t set in stone. The department noted that crews might have to pack up and return at a later date to finish off secondary repairs, though they promised to provide an update if that happens.
In a statement regarding the disruption, city representatives noted, “The staff and crews of the Tampa Water Department appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”
Until the asphalt is cleared on Monday afternoon, anyone heading westbound should likely leave a few minutes early or scout out a detour.
