Tampa Traffic Alert: Water Main Break Snarls Traffic On East 7th Avenue Through Wednesday

TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers heading through East 7th Avenue near North 40th Street this morning are in for a slow trek. Starting at 8:30 a.m. today, May 11, the Tampa Water Department shut down both the outside westbound and outside eastbound lanes to tackle a water main break.

The closure, which stretches between North 40th Street and North 39th Street, isn’t just for cars—the sidewalk is also off-limits while crews dig in to make repairs.

City officials have set up barricades and posted signs throughout the area to help reroute the flow of traffic, but they are urging everyone behind the wheel to stay alert and use extra caution.

If everything goes according to plan, the city expects to have the lanes reopened and traffic patterns back to normal by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. However, that timeline isn’t set in stone. Because the job depends heavily on clear skies, any unexpected rain could push the schedule back.

The Water Department also noted that they might need to swing back by at a later date for finishing touches, promising to provide updates if that happens.
