TAMPA, Fla. – Commuters heading into downtown Tampa should prepare for significant delays today as city crews move in to repair the local water system.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. this morning, the Tampa Water Department cordoned off several key lanes at the busy intersection of South Plant Avenue and West Platt Street.

The maintenance work is hitting several directions at once. Specifically, the center and right-turn northbound lanes on South Plant Avenue are now out of commission between West Hyde Park Place and West Platt Street. Drivers heading east aren’t catching a break either; the outside eastbound lane and the dedicated bike lane on West Platt Street are closed from South Hyde Park Avenue over to South Plant Avenue.

City workers have already deployed barricades and directional signage to help navigate the detour, but locals know this bottleneck well, and congestion is expected to build quickly. While the goal is to keep cars moving, the Water Department noted that they might have to shift lane closures around as the repairs progress, depending on what they find underground.

If the weather holds up and the repairs go according to plan, the city expects to pull the orange cones and restore normal traffic flow by 5:00 p.m. today—just in time for the tail end of the evening commute.

For now, officials are urging everyone to hunt for an alternate route or, at the very least, bake some extra time into their morning and afternoon travels.
