TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers in South Tampa can stick to their usual routes this weekend after city officials abruptly canceled a planned road closure.

The Tampa Water Department announced on Sunday regarding the maintenance work on South Himes Avenue has been called off. The project was originally set to shut down all lanes between West San Carlos Street and West San Miguel Street North starting at 9 a.m. Sunday and lasting through Monday afternoon.

According to the update, a “change in requested work requirements” led to the sudden cancellation.

The road is now open to normal traffic. However, the repairs aren’t off the table permanently; officials stated they will issue a new notification once the maintenance work has been rescheduled.

ORIGINAL REPORT: Drivers in Tampa may need to adjust their routes this week as city crews begin urgent maintenance on the local water system.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 4, the Tampa Water Department closed all lanes on a section of South Himes Avenue. The full road closure affects the stretch between West San Carlos Street and West San Miguel Street North.

Officials have set up barricades and detour signs to help direct traffic around the work zone, but motorists are urged to use extra caution if they cannot avoid the area.

Crews are currently working to repair the water distribution system and hope to have the job finished quickly. The road is scheduled to reopen to normal traffic patterns by 4 p.m. on Monday, January 5.

However, the Water Department noted that this timeline isn’t set in stone; the schedule could shift if the weather turns bad or if the repairs require unexpected modifications. Officials also warned that crews might need to return at a later date to wrap up additional work.

Updates will be released if the closure needs to be extended.
