Spruce Street Lanes Shut Down For Major Sewer Repairs

TAMPA, Fla. – Drivers heading through West Tampa this week should brace for significant delays as city crews dig in for emergency sewer repairs.

Work kicked off Monday on a critical gravity sewer main located at 3613 West Spruce Street, a project that has effectively severed one of the area’s busy east-west connectors.

The closure affects both eastbound and westbound lanes on West Spruce Street between North Himes Avenue and North Sterling Avenue.

According to city officials, the repair site is expected to remain active through Friday, February 27, though that timeline depends entirely on whether the weather holds up and what crews find once they get underground.

To keep traffic moving, the city has mapped out a series of detours that utilize West Cypress Street and North Dale Mabry Highway.

If you are heading east on Spruce, you will be directed south on Himes, west on Cypress, and then north on Dale Mabry. Those traveling westbound will follow the reverse pattern. While these routes are clearly marked, the influx of diverted cars is already causing sluggish movement through the Virginia Park community.

It isn’t just local drivers feeling the squeeze; HART bus routes have been altered to navigate around the construction zone, potentially adding time to daily commutes for transit riders. City representatives are urging anyone who normally relies on this stretch of Spruce Street to leave early or find a different route entirely until the weekend.
