Tampa Wants Your Story: Grab A Pen And Help Write America’s 250th Chapter

TAMPA, Fla. – The nation is just two months away from its 250th birthday, and the City of Tampa wants to make sure its residents’ voices are part of the record. City officials launched “The Art of the Pen” this Monday, a community writing project designed to gather local perspectives ahead of the country’s landmark semiquincentennial.

The initiative invites everyone from seasoned poets to people who haven’t picked up a pen since high school to reflect on the core ideals of the Declaration of Independence.

The city is looking for original poems, essays, or short stories that tackle themes like justice, honor, and the pursuit of happiness. To get the creative juices flowing, the city provided prompts using historic phrases such as “We mutually pledge to each other” and “When in the course of human events.”

There are a few ground rules for those looking to participate. Short stories and essays need to stay under the 500-word mark, while poets are asked to keep their work to 150 words or less. The goal isn’t just about literary perfection; it’s about capturing a snapshot of what America means to Tampa residents in 2026.

This writing project serves as a prelude to “Liberty by the Bay,” Tampa’s massive Fourth of July celebration. While that event will feature the usual heavy hitters—drones, fireworks, and live music—the city hopes these written reflections will provide a more personal, lasting connection to the holiday.

“The goal is simple: elevate Tampa’s voices and perspectives as part of this historic milestone,” the city noted in its announcement. By gathering these stories, officials aim to complement the loud spectacle of the waterfront celebration with the quiet, thoughtful reflections of the people who live there.

If you want to get involved or check out the full list of writing prompts, the city has posted all the submission details and guidelines at tampa.gov/artofthepen.
