TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Emergency crews shut down the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 19 North early Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle collision that sent three people to the hospital.
Tarpon Springs police officers and fire rescue crews responded to the scene near East Tarpon Avenue at approximately 2:25 a.m. Investigators determined that a red 2022 Hyundai sedan and a silver 2010 Chevrolet SUV collided in the southbound lanes just north of the intersection.
Three people riding in the Hyundai suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Paramedics transported all three occupants to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The Tarpon Springs Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit was called to the scene to head the investigation. Authorities stated that they have not yet been able to determine who was driving the Hyundai at the time of the collision, citing conflicting statements given to officers during the initial response.
The southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 19 North at East Tarpon Avenue remained closed for several hours Tuesday morning for scene documentation and debris cleanup. Police requested that drivers completely avoid the area.
The investigation into the cause of the crash remains active. Police ask anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet given a statement to contact Detective Hurley at 727-938-2849.
