ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A Sunday morning call turned into a major crime scene today after an officer-involved shooting in a St. Petersburg neighborhood left one man hospitalized and triggered a massive independent investigation.
The incident unfolded at approximately 11:15 a.m., when a St. Petersburg Police officer arrived at 121 Pershing Street Northeast in response to a call. Authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the initial emergency call, but the situation quickly escalated, resulting in the officer discharging their weapon.
The responding officer escaped the encounter completely unharmed. However, a man at the scene was struck by gunfire and sustained injuries. Emergency medical personnel treated the man on site before transporting him to a nearby hospital.
Law enforcement officials have not yet released his name or provided an update on his current medical condition.
Following standard protocol for law enforcement shootings in the region, the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Task Force was immediately activated. The independent task force will spearhead the investigation to ensure an objective review of the events leading up to the gunfire.
