Deficit Concerns Mount as Republicans Rush to Pass Landmark Legislation by July 4
The U.S. Senate has plunged into a marathon “vote-a-rama” on President Trump’s sweeping “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” setting the stage for a dramatic showdown as Republicans race against a self-imposed July 4 deadline.
After an all-night debate and a 16-hour reading of the bill by Senate clerks, lawmakers are now offering an unlimited number of amendments, with Democrats poised to force tough votes on their GOP colleagues.

The massive legislation, which includes increased spending for border security, defense, and energy production offset by cuts to healthcare and nutrition programs, narrowly passed the House last month. However, the Congressional Budget Office projects it will add nearly $3.3 trillion to the deficit over the next decade.
Despite concerns from some Republicans, including Senators Rand Paul and Thom Tillis, who both voted against advancing the bill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune remains determined to “get this legislation across the finish line.”
