PINELLAS PARK, Fla. – A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition following a Friday night collision in Pinellas Park, where an electric dirtbike was rear-ended by a pickup truck.
The incident occurred on May 29th, 2026, at roughly 8:55 PM. According to the Pinellas Park Police Department, the teenager was riding the e-dirtbike westbound in the travel lanes of the 6300 block of 70th Avenue. A Chevrolet S10 pickup truck, driven by 71-year-old Michael Smith, was traveling in the same direction when it struck the back of the moving bike.
Investigators revealed that the electric dirt bike had no lights on, making it difficult to see in the dark. The teenager was also not wearing a helmet at the time of the impact.
Emergency responders transported the juvenile to a local hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in critical condition. Smith stayed at the scene and is cooperating fully with law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that neither speed nor driver impairment played a role in the accident.
The police department noted that the crash remains under active investigation. They also used the incident to issue a safety warning to local residents regarding the legality of certain electric vehicles.
“As a reminder to our community, e-dirtbikes are dangerous and not legal to be operated on the roadways of Florida,” the Pinellas Park Police Department stated in a news release. “Under Florida State Statute 316.20655 and 316.003, all e-bicycles must be equipped with operational pedals and not exceed 28 MPH. We encourage everyone to educate themselves before operating e-bicycles on the roadways of Pinellas County. Remember to ride safe, utilize safety equipment/ lights, and adhere to the laws of the road.”
