LAKELAND, Fla. – An investigation into two stolen vehicles took a sharp turn last week, thanks to the work of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Forensics Investigations Unit. The case, which highlights the critical role of forensic science in modern law enforcement, resulted in the arrest of a 14-year-old suspect on probation for a series of felonies.

The incident began on Sunday, September 14, when two separate Lakeland residents reported that their vehicles had been stolen. The first, a 2020 Kia Forte, was reported missing at approximately 8:15 a.m. Just two hours later, a second resident discovered his Toyota Tacoma had also been taken.

The Toyota owner, however, had a key advantage: a mobile app that tracked his vehicle’s location. He shared the data with deputies, pinpointing his stolen truck in a field off of Parker Street West.

Upon arrival, deputies made a significant discovery. Not only was the stolen Toyota there, but the Kia Forte was also parked nearby, both concealed from the road. The PCSO Forensics Investigations Unit was immediately called to the scene to process both vehicles for evidence.

Fingerprints were recovered from the exterior of both cars, as well as from various items found inside. These latent print cards were then taken to the PCSO Identification Section, where technicians ran them through a database.

The results were swift and definitive: prints from the hood, driver’s door, and a rear door were positively identified as belonging to 14-year-old Eluterio Koenig.

Koenig, authorities confirmed, had a prior conviction for theft and had been on probation since December 2024.

Confronted with the evidence, detectives interviewed Koenig. Initially hesitant, he eventually confessed to both thefts. He admitted to stealing the Kia and discarding its key, as well as taking the Toyota, parking it where it was found, and leaving its key inside.

Koenig was subsequently arrested and faces a litany of charges, including two counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle (F3), two counts of burglary (F3), grand theft of a controlled substance (F3), and violation of probation (M2).

“Last week was National Forensic Science Week,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd noted, “where we take time to express our appreciation for our forensics investigators, identification technicians, and latent print examiners – and this case is just one of thousands of examples of how integral they are to solving crimes and putting criminals in jail. I’m so proud of these agency members who work so hard behind the scenes to help keep our citizens safe.”

The successful identification and arrest serve as a testament to the powerful combination of modern technology, dedicated law enforcement, and the crucial science of forensics.
