A Tennessee mother has been arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse or neglect after she allegedly struck her daughter with a car in a school parking lot. According to authorities, the incident occurred after the child reportedly missed the school bus.

Misty Sue Coleman, 48, was taken into custody last week following an investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 19, at the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.

The sheriff’s office reported that a School Resource Deputy was called to the school’s administration office regarding a student who was “visibly upset” and said she had been struck by her mother’s vehicle. The student, whose age and name have not been released, told school staff that her mother, identified as Misty Sue Coleman, became angry because she had missed the bus.

The child claimed that as she was exiting the vehicle, Coleman “accelerated before the child was fully outside, striking the victim’s right ankle and driving away from campus without stopping,” a news release from the sheriff’s office stated.

Investigators were able to obtain surveillance footage from the school parking lot, which they said corroborated the student’s account. The video allegedly shows the student “partially exiting the rear passenger side before the vehicle accelerated, striking the child and leaving the scene with the door still open.”

Following the preliminary investigation, deputies arrested Coleman. She was subsequently released after posting bond and is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on September 3.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office stated that no further details would be released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and the fact that it involves a juvenile.
