A 43-year-old woman is behind bars facing first-degree murder charges after authorities say she stabbed her elderly mother to death inside an Uptown residence on Tuesday.
Officers with the Memphis Police Department initially headed out to a house along the 600 block of Bethel Avenue following a report of a disturbance. Upon entering the home, they found 74-year-old Jannie Green seated in a chair, suffering from several stab wounds.
Paramedics and officers attempted life-saving measures, but their efforts failed, and Green was pronounced dead at the scene, News 3 reported.
While investigators and emergency crews were still processing the Bethel Avenue house, Tiffany Lafay Green Barber walked directly into a local police station wearing clothes covered in blood.
According to the outlet, Barber approached desk personnel and stated that she had stabbed someone at the Bethel Avenue address. Officers took her into custody on the spot.
During a subsequent interview with detectives, Barber stated that she had stabbed her mother prior to walking away from the residence. Investigators noted that Barber also admitted to throwing the weapon into an alleyway running behind Bethel Avenue.
Barber is charged with first-degree murder along with tampering with or fabricating evidence. As of Tuesday evening, her bond had not yet been determined. Court records show she is scheduled for an initial appearance before a judge on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
