Tennis Champ Swaps Rackets For Boccia Balls As Lone US Rep At 2026 World Championships

United States athlete Nick Taylor is heading to South Korea this summer. He was just selected as the only American competitor for the Seoul 2026 World Boccia Championships, which run from August 26 to September 3.

Taylor plays in the BC4 class. While this marks his first trip to the World Championships for boccia, he has plenty of experience on the global stage. He actually spent years competing in wheelchair tennis before making the switch to boccia in 2021. During his tennis career, he won 11 Grand Slam titles and took home four Paralympic medals.

Since he changed sports five years ago, Taylor has steadily worked his way up the global BC4 leaderboards. He currently holds the 18th spot in the world rankings.

“I am extremely honored and humbled to represent Boccia United States in the World Championships,” Taylor said. “To qualify for such a prestigious event has been one of my top goals since I began playing.”

Before he packs for Seoul, Taylor has a major tournament stateside. He will join other Boccia United States athletes in Alabama for the Birmingham 2026 World Boccia Challenger. That event happens June 17 through June 22 at the Lakeshore Foundation, the team’s official home base.

The upcoming Birmingham tournament is a notable milestone for the organization. It will be the first international boccia competition held on US soil since 2017.
