Tensions Flare As Trump Accuses Iran Of Violating Ceasefire Ahead Of Pakistan Peace Talks

President Trump claimed on Sunday that Iran broke a two-week ceasefire by firing on international vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, just hours before diplomatic teams were set to meet in Islamabad for another round of negotiations.

Writing on Truth Social, the President stated that Iranian forces fired on a French ship and a United Kingdom freighter. “Iran decided to fire bullets yesterday in the Strait of Hormuz — A Total Violation of our Ceasefire Agreement!” Trump wrote, adding, “That wasn’t nice, was it?”

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed Saturday that they had fired on two vessels, claiming the ships attempted to “bypass” their authority.

The IRGC recently announced a return to “strict” control over the waterway, citing the ongoing U.S. naval blockade as the reason. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei characterized the U.S. blockade as “unlawful and criminal” and a violation of the Pakistani-mediated truce.

Despite the exchange of fire, a U.S. delegation is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on Monday evening to continue peace talks. This follows a previous session last weekend attended by Vice President Vance, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner.

While the specific attendees for Monday’s meeting have not yet been confirmed by the White House, the President expressed confidence in a final resolution during a phone call with ABC’s Jon Karl.

“It will happen. It’ll either happen the nice way or it’ll happen the hard way,” Trump told Karl on Sunday.

The rhetoric between the two nations remained sharp over the weekend. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state-owned Press TV that his country’s armed forces remain “ready” if the fighting resumes.

Meanwhile, Trump issued a stern warning regarding the consequences of failing to reach a deal, suggesting a shift in military strategy toward Iranian infrastructure.

“We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran,” Trump wrote on Sunday. He followed up the post by stating, “NO MORE MR. NICE GUY! They’ll come down fast, they’ll come down easy and, if they don’t take the DEAL, it will be my Honor to do what has to be done.”

Control over the Strait of Hormuz has been a primary point of contention since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on February 28.

Although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously stated the waterway would remain open to commercial traffic during the ceasefire, the IRGC’s move to restrict shipping has complicated the landscape of the Islamabad talks.
