Terror On I-4: Gunman Arrested After Road Rage Chase In Plant City With Child In Crosshairs

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – What started as a Wednesday afternoon drive turned into a terrifying gauntlet for a local family when a road rage incident escalated into a rolling shootout across Hillsborough County.

On April 29, 2026, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office moved quickly to arrest 33-year-old Nicolas Totherow after he allegedly chased a vehicle filled with four people—including a young child—while repeatedly opening fire.

The chaos began around 3:14 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 92 and Wiggins Road. A frantic caller told 911 dispatchers that a man in another vehicle was following them and shooting.

Even as the victims tried to flee, Totherow didn’t let up, pursuing them northbound on Park Road and onto the eastbound on-ramp of Interstate 4. He continued to discharge his firearm on the highway until the victims finally managed to escape by exiting onto County Line Road, while Totherow sped away toward the east.

When deputies caught up with the victims, they found the vehicle riddled with bullet holes, though miraculously, no one inside was struck. Detectives quickly identified Totherow as the primary suspect and tracked him down by 6:00 p.m. that same evening.

After taking him into custody, investigators recovered a firearm from his car. During his police interview, Totherow reportedly made a chilling confession, admitting he fired the rounds with the explicit intent to kill the driver.

Totherow now faces a long list of felony charges, including attempted first-degree premeditated murder, four counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, discharging a weapon from a vehicle, and armed possession of a controlled substance.

Records also show he was driving with a suspended or revoked license at the time of the attack.

“This reckless and violent behavior put multiple innocent lives at risk on our roadways,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said following the arrest. He credited the “quick actions” of the dispatch team and the coordinated effort of deputies for catching the suspect before the situation turned fatal, reiterating that such violence has no place in the community.

The investigation remains active, and the Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with further information to call 813-247-8200.
