TAMPA, Fla. – A violent morning crash on a major Tampa roadway left one driver dead and another hospitalized after a speeding Tesla collided with a turning Volkswagen, causing it to flip over.
The Tampa Police Department responded to reports of a severe two-vehicle wreck at approximately 7:13 a.m. in the 11600 block of North Florida Avenue. Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that a blue 2022 Tesla was traveling northbound on Florida Avenue at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a 2024 Volkswagen traveling southbound was attempting to make a left-hand turn into a local dealership.
The high-speed collision occurred directly on the passenger side of the Volkswagen. The force of the impact caused the Volkswagen to overturn.
Arriving police officers immediately attempted life-saving measures on the driver and sole occupant of the Volkswagen, described as a white male in his mid-30s. Despite their efforts, the man was tragically pronounced deceased right at the scene.
The driver and sole occupant of the Tesla, a Hispanic male in his early-20s, survived the crash. He was transported by emergency crews to a nearby hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Following the wreck, the northbound lanes of Florida Avenue between Fowler and Bougainvillea Avenues were completely locked down for several hours while traffic detectives gathered evidence and cleared the debris. Police have since confirmed that all lanes have been reopened to normal traffic.
The incident remains an active and ongoing investigation. Detectives are currently working to confirm the exact specifics that led to the fatal wreck and to determine what, if any, criminal charges will be applicable regarding the high speed involved.
