A Texas couple faces charges after allegedly abandoning a 12-year-old boy who returned home from school to find their apartment completely empty.
Copperas Cove police responded to a call on Friday after the boy went to a neighbor’s home. Officers determined the boy’s mother, Erica Renee Sanders, and her boyfriend, Keven Dwayne Adams, had seemingly moved out while the child was in school. The apartment was found completely bare.
The couple was contacted and initially claimed the boy’s uncle was supposed to pick him up, a claim the uncle denied. An arrest affidavit noted that Adams “complained at length” about the 12-year-old during his interview. The couple also reportedly refused to provide a new address to child protective services.
Police records indicate that five and a half hours passed from the time the boy discovered the abandonment to the time he, the couple, and police finally connected.
Sanders and Adams were both arrested on charges of abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return.
