Texas, Louisiana Senators Turn Heat Up On Minnesota Gov. Walz For Alleged $9 Billion Fraud Scheme

Senate Republicans have launched a unified inquiry into Minnesota’s handling of federal funds, directing a formal letter to outgoing Governor Tim Walz regarding accusations of massive fraud within the state’s child care assistance programs.

The correspondence, spearheaded by Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chair Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), was signed by the entire Senate Republican Conference.

The lawmakers allege that significant oversight failures in Minnesota allowed “front groups” to siphon off taxpayer money intended for social services, with some estimates suggesting the misappropriated funds could exceed $9 billion since 2018.

“We write to express serious concern regarding recent reports and federal investigations alleging widespread fraud and misuse of federal funds within Minnesota’s state-administered child care assistance programs,” the senators wrote.

The letter contends that “negligent management” of these resources raises questions about whether the state has adequate verification systems in place to protect funds meant for vulnerable children and working families.

The inquiry coincides with aggressive moves by federal agencies to stem the alleged financial bleeding. Under the direction of the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has already moved to freeze child care payments to Minnesota.

Federal officials stated the freeze will remain in effect pending the results of verification processes and audits determining how the money was spent.

This push for accountability aligns with broader legislative efforts in Washington to crack down on financial crimes. Senator Cornyn recently introduced the Fraud Accountability Act, legislation designed to classify fraud as a clearly deportable offense under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Additionally, the administration has established a new Assistant Attorney General for Fraud position to specifically target the misuse of taxpayer dollars nationwide.

In their letter, the senators emphasized Congress’s constitutional “power of the purse,” asserting their duty to ensure federal tax dollars are not squandered.

“Some authorities estimate that billions in federal funds across various programs, including child care, nutrition, Medicaid, and housing assistance, may have been misappropriated,” the letter stated. The lawmakers are demanding a full accounting of the state’s oversight protocols and the extent of the financial damage.
