A horrific series of events unfolded early last Friday morning as a Texas man allegedly shot five people—killing three—at a home in Mabank before driving to a Buc-ee’s convenience store in Ennis, crashing his vehicle into the building, and then attempting to take his own life.

Christopher Reid Jr., 29, is currently hospitalized in critical condition after the incident, which began with a shooting around 2:30 a.m. at a home off Taso Drive in the Cedar Creek subdivision in Mabank. Police say Reid fled the scene in a 2003 Dodge Caravan.

The deceased victims of the Mabank shooting have been identified as Kimberly Simpson, 51, Connie Patrick, 72, and Ronny Hammonds, 57. All three suffered gunshot wounds, and Hammonds also sustained blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds, according to authorities.

Two other victims were shot and hospitalized: Colton Reid, 24, and Henry Hopgood, 70. Their current conditions were unknown as of Sunday evening.

A neighbor, Cheryl Noble, described a terrifying encounter after one of the victims came to her door. “He came tapping on the door. Real loud,” Noble told WFAA. “He said, ‘Help me, I’ve been shot.’ He said his brother shot him.” The neighbor noted that her front door, deck, and steps were stained with blood following the desperate plea for help.

After the initial shooting, Reid allegedly drove to the Buc-ee’s in Ennis, where he reportedly crashed his Caravan into the convenience store around 5 a.m. Inside the store, he struck a woman, pinning her to a sales display. The woman is expected to survive with non-life-threatening injuries. Following the crash, Reid shot himself in the head.

Reid was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the shootings or the subsequent actions at Buc-ee’s. Investigators have not confirmed whether Reid targeted family members, though one of the surviving victims was identified as Colton Reid.

Police have not yet announced what charges Christopher Reid Jr. will face if he survives. The investigation remains ongoing.
