California Senator’s Ejection from DHS Press Conference Sparks Emotional Reactions and Accusations of “Sinister” Administration Tactics
The removal of Democratic California Senator Alex Padilla from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference last month has continued to send shockwaves through Capitol Hill, with Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett revealing she “literally” cried upon witnessing the footage.
The incident, where Padilla was handcuffed face down on the floor after disrupting DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s remarks, has ignited a firestorm of criticism and accusations against the current administration.

Rep. Crockett, speaking on the “Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know” podcast on Wednesday, recounted her emotional reaction to the incident. She explained that she had no prior warning before seeing the footage repeatedly played on television in another House member’s office.
“I literally just broke down in tears and started crying — because it is hard for me to imagine,” Crockett stated, her voice heavy with emotion. She highlighted Padilla’s significance as California’s first Latino senator, emphasizing the perceived lack of respect shown to his position and humanity. “This is the first Latino senator that the state of California has ever had,” she added. “He is the senior senator in that state … And then there is no respect, not like a modicum of respect for him, nor his position, nor his humanity.”
Crockett further condemned the actions, suggesting they reveal a “sinister” side to the administration. “You would think that you wouldn’t do this to anybody, let alone a senator,” she remarked. “But it tells you, like, how sinister this administration is.” She echoed a sentiment expressed by Padilla himself, saying, “And like he said — and he said it almost through tears — imagine what they’re doing to people that aren’t senators. Imagine what they’re doing to that dishwasher, that landscaper, that farmer.”

The confrontation began when Senator Padilla interjected with a question while Secretary Noem was discussing Los Angeles riots. Security quickly intervened, instructing Padilla to raise his hands, which he reportedly refused to do, resisting as he was escorted from the room. The senator was subsequently directed to lie on his stomach and was handcuffed just outside the conference room.
The dramatic nature of the event has drawn strong reactions beyond Rep. Crockett. MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace, for instance, described the incident on “Pod Save America” in June as “one of the bleakest days” of her anchoring career, calling it a “chilling moment.”
However, the Department of Homeland Security maintains that the officers acted appropriately.
Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin defended the security’s actions in an X post following the incident. McLaughlin stated that Padilla was “disrespectful” and “lunged toward Secretary Noem” while failing to identify himself as a senator. She asserted, “Mr. Padilla was told repeatedly to back away and did not comply with officers’ repeated commands. @SecretService thought he was an attacker and officers acted appropriately.”
