Texas Democrats are watching a high-contrast battle unfold as the primary for the U.S. Senate enters its final stretch. Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett and State Representative James Talarico are locked in a tight race defined by vastly different financial strategies and campaign philosophies.

While Crockett holds a narrow lead in some recent surveys, she trails Talarico significantly in the traditional metrics of campaign spending and infrastructure.

The financial gap is wide. Data from the political advertising firm AdImpact reveals that Talarico has poured $6.6 million into a media blitz spanning broadcast, digital, and streaming platforms. This includes a high-profile 30-second Super Bowl ad and a dedicated Spanish-language content channel. In contrast, Crockett has spent approximately $260,000 on advertising—a 19-to-1 spending disadvantage.

Jen Ramos, a member of the Texas State Democratic Executive Committee and a Crockett ally, told NOTUS that this disparity is partly due to systemic barriers. Ramos argued that “traditional” campaigning methods, such as massive ad buys and standard management structures, were not designed with candidates of color in mind, forcing Crockett to adopt a more “unconventional” path to statewide viability.

Crockett is now moving to bridge that gap. AdImpact reported Monday that she has secured $112,000 in linear TV ad reservations. This move follows the release of a social media ad that drew attention for its stylistic choices, featuring an anime-inspired depiction of Donald Trump and AI-generated imagery of a crowd. While the ad positions Crockett as a “champion” who “drives the president crazy,” critics noted it lacked specific policy details.

Talarico, meanwhile, has centered much of his platform on policy-driven messaging, including proposals to tax billionaires and regulate the very AI-generated political content Crockett’s team utilized.

The Crockett campaign has also faced scrutiny over its digital rollout. For nearly two months, her website lacked an “issues” section. When it finally launched, it contained placeholder text and mislabeled policy goals—such as Social Security bills listed under gun reform—which site administrators attributed to standard technical glitches during a launch.

The polling reflects a volatile electorate. A University of Houston poll recently showed Crockett leading by eight points, while an Emerson College survey from January gave Talarico a nine-point edge.

With absentee voting already in progress and in-person early voting starting on February 17, the race has become a test case for whether a viral, unconventional strategy can overcome a massive disadvantage in traditional campaign spending.
