HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – While many residents settle in for the holiday evening, plunging temperatures across the region have triggered the activation of emergency cold weather shelters in Hillsborough County.
County officials confirmed that shelters will open tonight, Thursday, Nov. 27, following a National Weather Service forecast predicting a significant drop in temperature. The activation protocol kicks in whenever wind chills are expected to hit 40 degrees or lower for a sustained period of at least two hours—conditions now expected to sweep through the area between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Organizers are preparing for high demand on the holiday night but warned that capacity is limited. Residents who have any other options, such as staying with friends or family, are being asked to use those resources first to ensure space remains available for the homeless and those living in homes without adequate heat.

Two specific locations have been designated for adult intake. Doors will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight, though locations may close earlier if they reach maximum capacity.
Shelter Locations:
- Brandon: Tampa Bay Mission of Hope (110 S. Parsons Blvd.)
- Tampa: The Portico (1001 N. Florida Ave.)
A separate process is in place for families with minor children, as they cannot be housed in the adult congregate shelters. Metropolitan Ministries is distributing a limited number of motel vouchers. These are strictly first-come, first-served and require pre-registration.
Families in need must call (813) 209-1176 before 5 p.m. today to secure a voucher, provided supplies last.
