The $30 Million Sucker Punch: Coma-Inducing Aldi Attack Triggers Massive Florida Lawsuit

An October shopping trip to an Aldi in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, has resulted in a $30 million lawsuit after a customer was allegedly sucker-punched into a coma.

The family of Bruce Reese filed the civil complaint Wednesday in Broward County, targeting the grocery chain, a security firm, and the accused attacker, 45-year-old Dandrea Johnson.

As the Tampa Free Press previously reported, the incident began on October 11, 2025, when Johnson allegedly began harassing Reese over his service dog. The lawsuit claims the verbal abuse started the moment Reese entered the store and continued for several minutes across multiple aisles.

Despite the confrontation being captured on surveillance and occurring in view of staff, the filing alleges that employees and an on-site security guard failed to intervene or de-escalate the tension.

The situation turned physical near the store exit. The lawsuit states that Johnson sucker-punched Reese, knocking him unconscious instantly.

Reese reportedly hit the pavement head-first, suffering a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for 20 days. His family maintains that the attack has left him “profoundly brain-damaged” and unable to live independently.

A central claim in the suit is that Aldi management was already aware of Johnson, describing him as a “regular” customer known for being “unruly and aggressive.”

The plaintiffs argue that Aldi and DF Security LLC were negligent, especially given that the store is located in a high-crime area. The filing characterizes the lone, unarmed guard on duty as standing “like a statue” while the assault took place just steps away.

“A large part of what we’re doing here is making sure that Aldi and its contractor learns from the mistakes that it made in this case,” Justin Shapiro, the attorney representing the Reese family, told local affiliates WSVN.

Johnson currently faces a felony battery charge and is scheduled to appear in court on May 8. While the Reese family is seeking $30 million in damages and a jury trial, neither Aldi nor DF Security LLC has filed a formal response to the allegations as of Thursday.
