Florida Sen. Rick Scott Issues Warning On D.C. Spending: $40 Trillion Time Bomb

With the national debt officially crossing the $39 trillion mark last week, Senator Rick Scott is sounding the alarm on what he calls a “reckless spending spree” that is actively dismantling the American Dream for the next generation.

In a letter recently published by the Washington Post, the Florida Senator responded to a column by George Will regarding the nation’s fiscal trajectory. Scott argued that the consequences of government expansion are no longer a distant threat but a current reality felt by families across the country.

“For decades, Congress has fueled its spending spree by borrowing from our children and grandchildren’s futures to pay Communist China interest on our debt,” Scott wrote. He projected that the national debt will likely hit $40 trillion before this November’s midterm elections.

The Senator’s critique centered on the idea that federal intervention has directly inflated the cost of essential services. He noted that areas where the government has the most influence—such as housing, healthcare, and higher education—have become increasingly unaffordable for the average citizen.

“Every place that Washington has forced big government into our lives has hurt us,” Scott stated in the letter. “Big government has made the cost of living explode and is threatening to destroy the American Dream. This is especially true for younger Americans, who have been royally screwed by Washington’s failures and the massive costs they’ve created.”

While Scott acknowledged the necessity of a social safety net to prevent citizens from “falling through the cracks,” he maintained that such programs are unsustainable under the current budget model. He argued that the only path to stability is a radical reduction in the size and authority of the federal government.

The Senator concluded his letter with a blunt call to action for voters, framing the current economic situation as an immediate crisis rather than a long-term policy debate.

“This isn’t a problem to fix tomorrow; the ship is sinking today,” Scott wrote. “If your representative in Congress thinks big government can fix it, vote them out.”
