The Slip Of The Tongue That Exposed A Virginia Babysitter’s Cruelty

A Virginia woman is in prison after a careless comment to her employers unraveled months of systematic child abuse. Carly Rae Webb, 21, was sentenced on March 13 to one year behind bars followed by three years of probation after pleading guilty to charges stemming from her time caring for a two-year-old girl.

The investigation began when the child’s parents, identified only as Madison and Tyler, became suspicious of a remark Webb made about their daughter’s behavior. Webb mentioned that the toddler liked her chair so much that she would sit in it for hours at a time.

Finding the comment unusual, the parents decided to review footage from security cameras they had previously ignored out of a sense of trust.

The recordings revealed a pattern of neglect and physical mistreatment that occurred while the parents were at work. According to court records and testimony, the child was frequently left in her crib for up to nine hours at a time.

On one documented occasion, the girl was put to bed at 8:00 p.m. and did not receive food or water until her parents returned home at 4:00 p.m. the following day.

Evidence presented during the trial showed that Webb regularly threw away the meals the mother had prepared, choosing instead to eat in front of the hungry child.

The footage also captured Webb hitting, kicking, and taunting the toddler. The abuse included placing the girl in a box, shooting at her with a toy gun, and using profanity to mock her when she cried.

“When I saw the videos, I couldn’t believe it,” the child’s father testified. “Thank God we had the cameras.”

Webb’s defense attorney offered little explanation for the behavior beyond stating that Webb was a teenager at the time who “didn’t want to be a babysitter.”

Ultimately, Webb pleaded guilty to a felony count of child abuse and five misdemeanor counts of assault. While she originally faced 17 charges, her plea and sentencing reflect the specific counts of assault and felony abuse confirmed by the video evidence.
