The legal fallout from a high-profile security breach is heading to the courtroom today as a California man faces federal charges following a weekend of chaos.
Cole Allen, 31, appeared in court Monday after authorities charged him with assaulting a federal officer and discharging a weapon during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Against the backdrop of this incident and Saturday’s assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, The View co-host Ana Navarro used the Monday broadcast to argue that political figures have now gained a firsthand perspective on the reality of American school shootings.
Navarro noted that the events took place in rooms filled with the nation’s most influential figures. She argued that the experience of ducking for cover might serve as a catalyst for legislative change that has remained stalled for years.

“Now they know, they’ve lived it in their own flesh the fear that our school children go through,” Navarro said during the segment. “Now they know what it’s like to have to jump under a table the way that school children jump under a desk.”
The discussion touched on the geographical reach of gun violence in America, with Navarro listing malls, churches, and baseball fields as previous sites of trauma. She specifically questioned the lack of federal response following the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 20 children.
“I still don’t understand how Congress took no action after Sandy Hook,” she stated. “But maybe now that they have felt the fear themselves, they will do something.”
The suspect in the White House dinner incident, a teacher from Torrance, California, reportedly acquired his firearms—a handgun in 2023 and a shotgun in 2025—within his home state.
California currently maintains some of the most rigorous firearm regulations in the United States, including a ban on “assault weapons,” prohibitions on private sales, and state-maintained sales records. These specific laws have been frequently cited as a national model by gun control advocacy groups such as Everytown and the Brady Campaign.

While Navarro expressed hope that the direct experience of danger would shift the political needle, the effectiveness of existing state-level restrictions remains a central point of the ongoing national debate. Allen remains in custody pending his Monday hearing.
