Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) appeared on this morning’s Meet the Press to discuss the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, maintaining that the legal system must be allowed to run its course despite questions of political motivation.

Interviewed by moderator Kristen Welker, Senator Thune repeatedly emphasized his faith in the justice system, stating of Comey, “I trust the justice system. There will be a process. He will have his day in court.”

When pressed by Welker on whether the prosecution was politically motivated—given President Donald Trump’s public wish for his opponents to be charged and Attorney General Pam Bondi’s comment that “This is just the beginning”—Thune avoided a direct answer.

“Well, I think the important statement that he made, Kristen, was the last one. And that if he’s guilty, he should be judged. If he’s not guilty, he won’t be,” Thune responded, referring to the indictment itself.

He noted that the Senate Judiciary Committee had previously investigated the allegations against Comey, underscoring that the matter was considered “serious enough” to warrant an inquiry. Regarding the President’s controversial comments about charging other political opponents, Senator Thune dismissed the question as “speculative and hypothetical.”

Thune sought to separate the legal process from the political animosity between President Trump and the former FBI Director. He acknowledged the well-known mutual dislike, citing Comey’s recent “86 47” social media post, which he implied was ‘unbecoming’ of a former official.

Ultimately, Thune stressed that the indictment was brought by a grand jury—a jury of peers—and that the case now rests on the “law and the facts.” “I’m not a lawyer, but the courts will sort it out. And that’s why we have a process in this country,” he concluded.
